{The Robin’s Nest: Day 13}

Well, there’s not much going on (that we can see anyway) with the robin family these days, but this should be a pretty big week for them!  I’m guessing that the babies will hatch sometime between Wednesday and Friday.  This video isn’t very good, but I shot it with my phone yesterday afternoon just as the sun started going down when mama bird left the nest for a few minutes.  As you can see, all four eggs are still there…just waiting….

Hopefully I’ll have some baby bird pictures to share with you in a few days!

{Levitt Shell: Drew & Ellie Holcomb}

Tonight we went to Levitt Shell for an Easter Eve concert featuring Drew & Ellie Holcomb.  If you’re not familiar with them, you should definitely check them out.  I’ve loved their music for a while now, and tonight’s concert was the perfect blend of good music, good weather, good food & good friends!

Drew & Ellie are from Memphis, and this video was filmed here in town at some of their favorite places.  I love the real life simplicity of it, and it’s a beautiful song.

{The Robin’s Nest: Day 7}

There’s not really too much to update you on regarding our little robin family.  Mama robin spends much of her time doing this….

And Daddy robin sits atop our neighbor’s roof a lot watching out after his little family…

Sometimes I see him down in the grass near the tree the nest sits in.  He gives me the evil eye when I get too close to Mama and the babies.

Sometimes Mama will join him down there for a bit if she’s taking a break from tending to her eggs…

Earlier today when she was taking a break, I snuck out there with my chair and camera to get a shot of the inside of the nest….you know, just to see if everything still looked okay.  As soon as I started snapping away, she began squawking at me over and over and over again.  The daddy bird came flying in, and I decided it was best for me to step away from the nest and let them be.  I think I just about gave her a heart attack…..or at least she almost gave me one!  I don’t know exactly what she was thinking, but I imagine it went something like this….

And this is the best shot I got.  As you can see, the little eggs are doing just fine…just like they were a few days ago.

In honor of the robin family…

Mama robin is spending a lot of time in the nest tending to her eggs these days.  Every time I walk outside I check on her, and she’s usually sitting there keeping her babies warm.  In honor of our little robin family (and because Yohannes has an Easter party at school today), I made these cute little bird’s nest cupcakes!  I used this recipe and this blog post as inspiration & I think they just might become an Easter tradition at our house!

{The Robin’s Nest: Day 4}

Day 4: Guess what we have?  Yep, my suspicion from yesterday was right & mama bird laid a fourth egg!  As I said previously, she had been spending just a few hours in the nest, but yesterday and today she sat in it most of the daytime hours (I’m guessing she was there about 8 or 9 hours total).  I took these pictures today (and confirmed that we have a fourth egg) when she was taking a break from taking care of her babies-to-be.  I was excited to see that there were four when I looked at the display on my camera (remember I have to stand in a chair and hold my camera as high as my arm will extend to get these, so I don’t know what’s in there until I look at the image).  I still think they’re the prettiest shade of blue, and they’re really small because the nest itself is pretty small (to read more about that visit this website, which has great facts about robins).

As you can see here, the tree that has become home to the little robin family is right beside my garden (which makes it even more fun)!
